The VZ8M is the latest application of the synthesis system behind Casio's popular VZ synths. Simon Trask evaluates iPD synthesis in this age of digital development and analogue reincarnation. As technology becomes more 'digital' and music moves 'back into analogue' a curious middle ground opens up between them - a middle ground occupied by Casio's VZ8M synth module. I don't ever remember making patches on the VZ series without a computer editor. Was almost impossible to edit from the VZ8M LCD display. But the CZ series were easy to edit right on the keyboard. Actually the CZ's mostly had one button per function for editing. Still have all the VZ series including the PG-380 guitar with built in 6 voice VZ.

Hi I'm Oli Larkin, developer of VirtualCZ - a new Casio CZ series emulator/editor plug-in. Ask Me Anything
The CASIO CZ synths are much loved digital synths from the 1980s, featuring a synthesis technique called Phase Distortion.
About me: I'm based in York UK, and have been making plug-ins since 2003. Other (released) projects include Endless Series (a Shepard Tone FX plug-in) and pMix (a Plug-in preset interpolator). I also maintain a popular, free, open source C++ framework for making plug-ins (WDL-OL) which is used by many other plug-in developers.
